From the Universal Magazine. The Character of a True
Englishman, By Cardinal Howard.
Written originally in Italian, and addressed to the Pope, at
Rome, by Pasquin.
The free born English, generous and wise,
Hate chains, but do not government despise.
Rights of the crown, tributes and taxes, they,
  When legally exacted, freely pay.
Force they abhor, and wrongs they scorn to bear
More guided by their judgment than their fear.
